So the Government is ending its contract with JPS. What happens next?

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz dropped a bomb recently, when he announced that the Government would not be renewing its current licence with the Jamaica Public Service when it ends in 2027.

The licence allows JPS to be the sole electricity distributor across the island. Vaz said the move will help lower electricity costs, bring in more clean energy like solar and wind, and allow other companies to enter the market.

He also made it clear that the Government does not plan to take over JPS, but they do want a new agreement with better terms that work for Jamaicans. So they are open to renegotiating.
