Audit raises red flags
Sighhhh
The Auditor General's report on Hurricane Melissa spending is raising concerns about how hurricane relief money was handled after the storm.
According to the report, as of February 2026, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management had spent less than 2% of the J$1.4 billion that was donated to the government through direct deposits and its support Jamaica platform.
The audit also flagged weak oversight, poor record keeping and missing documentation linked to emergency spending.
Additionally, almost J$140 million and over US$100,000 in Beryl donations were still unused when they started fundraising for Melissa relief. ODPEM said the limited use of funds was because the Ministry of Finance had yet to approve the spending.

TransJam revenue gets big boost
Big numbers
The May Pen to Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000 is driving major revenue growth for TransJamaican Highway.
According to the company’s latest financial report, the southern extension added US$3.5 million to revenues, which was about 12% of the company’s overall revenue.
Revenues for the quarter were up 29% to US$29 million compared to the same quarter last year.
The company said that stronger traffic volumes across its network, supported by wider adoption of its electronic toll system, contributed to its performance.
Cuba out of fuel
Crisis!
Cuba says it has officially run out of diesel and fuel oil, deepening the island’s energy crisis.
Government officials say the country is struggling to secure imports as fuel shortages have triggered massive blackouts, disrupted transport and caused growing protests across the country.
In some areas, residents have reportedly been dealing with power outages lasting up to 22 hours a day.
The crisis has also pushed fuel prices sharply higher and forced the closure of many gas stations. The situation worsened after tighter US sanctions disrupted oil shipments from Venezuela and other suppliers.
WhatsApp gets new privacy features
Incognito mode!
WhatsApp is rolling out new privacy features, including an expanded “incognito mode” option for chats and calls.
The platform says users will get more control over who can see their online activity and interact with them, as Meta pushes to strengthen privacy tools across the app.
At the same time, WhatsApp is also preparing to introduce ads through its Updates tab as the company looks for new ways to make money from the platform.
Meta says private messages and calls will remain encrypted and will not be used for ad targeting.
