So you got the job offer. Do these three things before you accept it.

First, calculate what you’re actually taking home. Your gross salary isn’t necessarily what will hit your account after deductions. If you’re in Jamaica, you can use the Payroll Jamaica Calculator to estimate your take-home pay.

Second, look beyond the salary...

BPO slowdown leaves office space empty

More than just job losses

A reported slowdown in BPO activity has left more than two hundred and forty-five thousand square feet of office and BPO space vacant across Kingston and Montego Bay.

That’s according to a report in the Financial Gleaner.

Jamaica Sotheby’s CEO Julian Dixon says reduced demand from outsourcing companies has left larger properties taking longer to lease than smaller commercial units.

The report comes after Global Services Association of Jamaica President Yoni Epstein said employment in the sector had fallen from roughly sixty thousand workers at its peak to about forty thousand.

Epstein attributed the decline to lower productivity, labour shortages, Hurricane Melissa and more competition from other outsourcing destinations.

Hard Rock US $757 million Mobay resort

Government approved!

Hard Rock International has confirmed government approval connected to its proposed integrated resort in Montego Bay, the Jamaica Observer reports.

The hotel and planned casino form part of a three-phase development that also includes UNICO Resort and DOMA Residences.

According to government figures cited by the newspaper, the wider project represents nearly seven hundred and fifty-seven million US dollars in projected investment, with eighteen hundred rooms and approximately thirty-two hundred permanent jobs.

The proposed casino would expand Jamaica’s gaming-tourism offering.

Guyana plans refinery and extended fuel storage

Reduce exposure to price shocks

Guyana’s government says its proposed national oil company would focus on refining and fuel storage, rather than producing crude oil.

The refinery would perform a similar function to Jamaica’s Petrojam—processing crude into usable fuels. But while Jamaica imports the crude it refines, Guyana already produces oil offshore.

Despite that production, Guyana still imports all the refined petrol and diesel it uses, according to a government statement reported by the Caribbean Media Corporation.

President Irfaan Ali says the proposal aims to strengthen fuel-supply security and reduce exposure to international price shocks.

The government is considering storage for thirty to one hundred and twenty days of supply. Ali says Guyana could eventually supply other CARICOM countries.

Shein's stock market debut gets rocky

Would you invest?

And finally—buying clothes from Shein is one thing, but would you buy its shares?

The fast-fashion giant made its Hong Kong stock-market debut on September first, raising approximately one-point-seven billion US dollars.

Shares fell as much as ten percent during trading before recovering to finish almost unchanged from the offer price.

The listing follows unsuccessful efforts to go public in New York and London, amid regulatory scrutiny.

For investors, the question is whether Shein can turn its popularity into sustained profits while navigating trade barriers and rising costs.
